   Grading Spelling:

The most difficult part of the spelling test is writing the sentence.

I use a system of grading that allows credit for each correct letter. ^c^a^t^ is worth four points as indicated by the ^. A student receives a point for beginning the word correctly, a point for each of the transitions between /c/ and /a/ then /a/ and /t/, and a point for ending the word correctly.

This system gives credit for successes and measures progress over time. Please note that missing letters is an automatic loss of two points.. In the example, if /a/ is incorrectly written as /i/, both transitions are then wrong.

This system works in the student’s favor. If a test receives a traditional score– a word is either right or wrong – the test score could be 73%. On my grading scale, the same test becomes an 80% due to partial credit. I know it may be confusing when you first see your child’s spelling test papers. Please feel free to stop in if you need more of an explanation.
