Thank you for your help with making the memory assignment. The memory assignment is the first grade to go into the grade book. If your child does not do the memory on Wednesday morning, he/she can still do it when it is mastered.

Up until this time, work has not been graded for “points.” We have worked at mastering the use of work time, the procedures for completing work, and how  workbook pages are managed.

We have completed all reading evaluations. We have had an introduction to all subject areas, as well as all specials. We are ready to begin first grade curriculum in earnest.

Continue to expect some tired children at the end of the school day.

Memory next week:

always due Wednesday morning

· John 14:15

If you love Me, you will obey what I command.

Students look forward to the weekly Mystery Reader. Parents, grandparents, or other significant relative bring two or three of their favorite books and join the class at 3:05 p.m. on Friday afternoons. It is a great shared experience! Students love the secret surrounding the guest’s appearance.

We hope that you will be able to join us sometime this school year as a mystery reader. Sign up is available on the classroom door.

Home Lunch

We are not able to heat lunches for students.

Our lunch time is 20 minutes long. By the time students are helped with opening items, seating, discipline and the occasional spill, lunch is a very busy time. Thanks for your help.

Library

We had our second trip to the school library to check out books. Each week, the library book is due on Monday morning. I encourage students to keep their library book in their backpack when they are not reading it.

DIBELS and STAR TESTGIN

The individual reports were sent home in Wednesday’s homework folder. The star testing is a vocabulary test (but requires the student to read the sentence on their own. DIBELS is a reading readiness test with subsets for letter naming fluency, phoneme segmentation fluency and nonsense word fluency. In December we will add the subsets Oral Reading Fluency and Retell Fluency.

Often the first STAR testing scores are troublesome for most first grade parents because the majority of first graders test on a kindergarten level. Please be reassured that most first graders who test at a kindergarten level at the beginning of the year leave first grade testing at a second grade level.

The beginning score does not determine the amount of progress that will be made in reading during this school year.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Students need to be prepared for changes in weather. Please be sure your child brings jackets/clothing that will keep them warm as the temperatures drop during the day. We go outside daily unless it is raining.

Grading Spelling:

The most difficult part of the spelling test is writing the sentence.

I use a system of grading that allows credit for each correct letter. ^c^a^t^ is worth four points as indicated by the ^. A student receives a point for beginning the word correctly, a point for each of the transitions between /c/ and /a/ then /a/ and /t/, and a point for ending the word correctly.

This system gives credit for successes and measures progress over time. Please note that missing letters is an automatic loss of two points.. In the example, if /a/ is incorrectly written as /i/, both transitions are then wrong.

This system works in the student’s favor. If a test receives a traditional score– a word is either right or wrong – the test score could be 73%. On my grading scale, the same test becomes an 80% due to partial credit. I know it may be confusing when you first see your child’s spelling test papers. Please feel free to stop in if you need more of an explanation.
